Dear Friend,
Spain has been pushed into the background by the recent war-scare, but her needs remain as great and as urgent as ever. Indeed it is not too much to say that they are greater than ever, for the food-shortage has become more acute and the children are beginning to suffer badly from undernourishment. There have been bad outbreaks of eczema due to malnutrition, and unless help comes from outside the condition of these tragic children can only worsen.
Milk, bread, rice, sugar, and (to make up for other deficiencies) chocolate are all badly needed. We can arrange for supplies of these goods to reach Spain, but we cannot do it without money.
The S.I.A. is responsible for three homes for children in Barcelona; the last consignment of these pitiful little fugitives from Franco numbered 400 from the North of Spain, and they are coming in all the time from the provinces occupied by Franco, and after every air-raid and bombardment.
We have been spared the horror of war in this country, but in Spain it still rages, and the plight of the child refugees in particular becomes increasingly serious. Sympathy is not enough. The children need food. Your help should come quickly. Need I say more?
Yours very truly,
Ethel Mannin
