ANTI FASCIST RELIEF COMMITTEE
Save the Orphaned and Homeless Refugee Children of Spain.
Two years of Civil War in Spain have brought their dread harvest. In the fighting, in the reprisals against the democratic population, in aerial bombardment of hospitals, schools, foodships and the working people, hundreds of thousands have been killed or maimed. Widows and orphans driven as refugees before the invading armies of the aggressors have thrown themselves on the goodwill of the Government and people of Republican Spain, thus imposing a tremendous strain on the food supplies, social services and accommodation of towns already severely damaged by incessant air attacks.
For the whole of the Spanish people this third winter of the war, threatens a period of hardship, hunger and disease, but for those children who with homes destroyed and parents killed must face these problems alone, the issues are even sharper and more urgent.
To care for the orphaned and vagabond waifs of the war is to tackle at the source the vital social problem of the physical and moral destruction of the younger generation of Spain. Already there are tens of thousands of boys and girls, infants and adolescents who have lost everything which gave them a solid attachment to Spanish society and soil. The National Commission of Spanish Women has undertaken the responsibility of caring for these tragic victims of aggression and civil war. They have plans for colonies which can meet the need, situated in areas where the dangers of bombardment and further destruction are slight. Food, milk, clothes, boots, soap, disinfectants and writing materials are all essential for their establishment and maintenance. These materials can only be imported, but we can ensure that they are available. We appeal to all who believe in the importance of proper opportunities for physical, mental and moral development for the young, to mothers and teachers, to social, cultural and educational organisations, to help us to supply these needs. Gifts of new goods will be promptly despatched, but donations of money will make bulk purchase possible, which will ensure the greatest economies in prices and freight.
The Spanish women have undertaken a heavy task. They have asked for assistance from their fellow women throughout the world. Here is an opportunity for everyone who feels appalled by the extension of wanton destruction to contribute in practical fashion to mitigate its present horrors and arrest those effects which, unchecked, might weaken and corrupt a democratic people for generations.
