TELEPHONE REPLY FROM SCHEVENELS REGARDING LEGAL COMMISSION TO SPAIN
The International League for Human Rights has prepared the delegation to Spain, and has suggested that it should consist of one representative each from the I.F.T.U., L.S.I., and the International League for Human Rights, together with an English Lawyer. They were endeavouring to get Mr. Pritt, but in the event of his being unable to participate they were desirous of getting hold of Mitcheson.
With regard to the expenses of the delegation, the International League for Human Rights had decided to bear the expenses of their own delegate and those of the lawyer. Schevenels arranged with Adler of the L.S.I, that the L.S.I, should bear the expense of their delegate. In view of this arrangement Schevenels thought he could promise that the I.F.T.U. would be prepared to bear the expenses of their delegate, as at the November joint meeting of the I.F.T.U. and L.S.I, it was decided that a delegation, apart from legal defence, should go to Spain to look after the interests of the Trade Unions. The position now was that the delegates of the I.F.T.U. and L.S.I. could combine the two purposes - the interests of the Trade Unions and legal defence.
He intimated that he would not bind himself with regard to the question of the payment of expenses, but would leave it in such a position as to enable the Executive to decide at their meeting next week.
