MINUTES OF MEETING OF THE GENERAL COUNCIL, HELD ON WEDNESDAY, 27th APRIL, 1938, AT 10 A.M. AT TRANSPORT HOUSE, SMITH SQUARE, LONDON, S.W.1.
Item 82. Spain.
The recommendation of the National Council of Labour that the General Council of the Trades Union Congress and the National Executive of the Labour Party agree to the appointment of a joint deputation to the Prime Minister at an early date with a view to renewing representation regarding the continuance of the Non-Intervention Policy, and in particular in light of the terms of the Anglo-Italian Treaty, was before the meeting.
Joint Deputation.
In view of the decision of the General Council to meet the Prime Minister, it was not thought necessary to adopt the recommendation of the National Council of Labour to attend on a joint deputation to him.
The Secretary then reported verbally on a meeting held in Paris on the 14th April, at which representatives of the I.F.T.U. and Labour and Socialist International had met Dr. J. Deutsch, who represented Dr. Negrin, the Spanish Premier, with regard to the situation in Spain. The meeting was the result of a preliminary discussion in London at which Dr. Deutsch had been present. The purpose of the meeting was to ascertain how matters stood in the British and French Labour Movements with regard to Spain. The report was RECEIVED.
Labour Party Spain Committee.
Mr. Tewson reported having attended a meeting of the Labour Party Spain Committee, held on the 26th April, 1938. Recommendations of the Committee for a National Week-end for Spain, May 21st-22nd, with a meeting at the Albert Hall, had been approved that morning by the Labour Party Executive. The recommendations were ENDORSED.
