15th September, 1942.
Mr. W.S. Evans,
Barry and District Trades Union Council,
25, Woodlands Road,
Dear Mr. Evans,
Many thanks for your letter of the 13th of September asking the General Council to endeavour to secure the release of former members of the International Brigade now interned in France and Spain, or the grant to them of the status of prisoners of war.
Our General Council have not in mind any actions on this matter. It may serve to explain the position if I attach herewith an extract from the Official Report of the House of Commons for the 1st October, 1941.
The proposals which you make are similar to some which have been circularised by the International Brigade Association and which presuppose relationships between the Governments in questions on a very much more cordial plane than existed in position with regard to the relationships between the British (or United States) and Vichy Governments has not improved since then.
