FRANCE.
Dear Comrade Schevenels,
SANTIAGO GALLUT CALVO.
Sir Walter and I have received very similar letters from the above Spanish refugee now resident in France. He claims he was formerly Secretary of the Santander Provincial Federation of Clerical and Technical Workers, and Secretary of the Santander Socialist Party. He performed military service for the Republicans in the war in Spain, and asks whether approaches could be made to the French Minister for the Interior with a view to his permission to stay in France being extended until his emigration to America is authorised.
I dont see what can be done about cases of this kind. We have informed him that we have taken the matter up with "our friends in France". Will it be possible for you to approach the C.G.T. on the question with a view to the French Minister of the Interior being asked to extend the period of the man's permit to stay in France.
With the Compliments of the Season.
Yours sincerely,
Assistant Secretary.
