Dear Dr. Janet Vaughan,
I feel sure you will not mind my troubling you at this juncture with a request.
During the war in Spain you very kindly managed to secure some microscopes for use in Spain. I have a pathetic case now of a medical student, the son of a doctor, who badly needs a microscope for his work. The doctor owing to the war and evacuation is not in a position to afford to buy a microscope for the boy. Do you think you can see your way to obtain the loan temporarily of a microscope to help this boy through his studies? Even a loan for a short time — six months or a year — might be very useful.
I will be pleased to send you the name of the pupil and the name of his father in confidence, if you could possibly see your way to get any friends of yours — and I know you move in circles which handle microscopes — to lend him this for a short time to help him in his studies.
I hope the war is not troubling you too much and that you are continuing with your research work.
