Francis Wall Justice (1796-1891) entered the Royal Navy on 13th February 1811, and served a long career through the middle years of the nineteenth century. He kept a log of the four ships he served on as midshipman, between 1813 and 1815. These are, HMS Union, HMS Edinburgh, HMS Bellerophon, and HMS Pactolus. While on Bellerophon, he describes the several days which Napoleon spent on board after the Battle of Waterloo, before his final exile.
The images of the log and the playbill are made available courtesy of their owner, Francis Justice’s descendant, Christopher L. Justice. Text transcriptions of the log of HMS Bellerophon have been added, and those for the other ships are in the process of being added.
