Report on the situation in Spain

              The parties of the Republican left advised the President of the Republic to appoint a genuinely Republican Cabinet with, or without the necessity for an immediate dissolution - to clear the mess of parties obtained from the manipulated election of a year ago, arranged by one of Lerroux's associates.
Ferdinando de los Rios (Socialist ex-Minister of Education) reminded the President (Alcala Zamora) that on 16/12/33, he referred to the necessity for a Government of acknowledged Republicans, the disillusion already caused by reason of what had occurred since July 1933, when the last remnants of a Liberal-minded government was destroyed and because of the conviction in regard to what was being prepared.    The harvest had surpassed expectation and the governments since Dec last had savagely persecuted the workers' organisations and sometimes had denied work to their members, consigned them to abject misery and, in some cases, had afforded impunity to those who had assassinated them.    These governments signified the impossibility of continuity and were the negation of it.    The workers' organisations were persecuted, their men imprisoned,  their clubs and halls threatened with closure and dissolution, hundreds of their mayors and town council majorities were removed by means of devious dark methods, and he asked for office for his Party to remove the anxiety of the workers and satisfy their just claims and said it was impossible under constitutional methods to allow the reactionary parties of the Right to govern the country.    Zamora did not take the advice offered by Rios or the Liberal Republicans and, being a moderate clerical himself, probably had little sympathy with it.    The new Government was announced on 4th October and Martial law was proclaimed on 6th October.    I have the terms of the public notice and you could have a translation if required.
"El Debate" (8/10/34) declared that separatism, Marxism and masonry were the three facets of anti-Spain and the enemy, and the clerical Press, "A.B.C" ("Daily Mail" of Spain), "El Debate" and  the vile "La Epoca" had an eight days' run of publicity in Madrid and in the country during the week's strike in Madrid .
