SPANISH MEDICAL AID COMMITTEE
Minutes of meeting held on March 29th 1939, at 69 Great Russell Street, W.C.1.
Present: Dr. H.B. Morgan (Chairman), Dr. J. Wright, Professor J.R. Marrack, Mr. J. Coyne, Miss N. Adam, Mr. C.H. Norman, Mr. N. Wiggins, Dr. J.A. Gillison, Mrs. L. Manning, Mr. G. Jeger.
Apologies for absence were received from Mr. R. Calder and Mr. T. Blewitt.
1) Minutes of meeting held on March 22nd 1939 were confirmed and signed.
2) Matters arising:
a) The Autochirs. Confirmation had been received from the Transport Agents that the 5 vehicles had been shipped to Valencia, and Mr. Holst had advised their arrival at Cartagena on March 20th.
It was decided to endeavour to get them back from Spain, for use in the Refugee Camps or in China. Enquiries to be made through the Foreign Office.
b) Letters had been received from Nurse Addy, who was still at Ucles (Enclosed). Further representation would be made to the Foreign Office regarding her safety.
c) There was no further news re the Dieppe Case. It was agreed after some discussion, that the Organising Secretary should pursue enquiries in Paris and Dieppe during his journey to Paris for the C.S.I. Conference.
d) Professor Marrack reported that the Mexican Government had now intimated their willingness to accept 40,000 Spanish refugees, and that there was a possibility that 1000 Internationals might be included.
3) Mr. David Johnstone appeared before the Commlttee, stated his financial position, and asked for further assistance, which he would repay when he obtained work.
It was agreed to continue his allowance of £2 per week for another 4 weeks, and to refund to Mrs. Biddulph the £1 she hed lent him.
4) Special Correspondence:
a) Dr. Quemada had written from Norway to Nurse Murray asking whether we could supply him with Spanish - English Dictionaries - ordinary and medical - and English surgical journals. It was agreed that we send the dictionaries and ask exactly what his further needs are.
b) The National Joint Committee invited us to be represented at a Conference to be held at Conway Hall on Saturday April 1st. Mrs. Manning and Mr. Wiggins agreed to go to the morning session and Dr. Morgan to the afternoon session.
c) Nurse Dorothy Low wrote from Pinewood Sanatorium advising us that she was making progress.
Dr. Gillison undertook to make enquiries from the Authorities.
