Dear Sir Walter,
I have just received your letter of yesterday.    I hope I have not shown myself ungrateful for all you did for us at the beginning but none of us dreamt that the War was going to last 3 years. Many prophesied a few months; for my own part I was quite sure it would be over within a year and it certainly would have been but for the ridiculous shillyshallying of our Government.
My outlays for equipment, foodstuff's and medical stores since August 1936 amount to £21,436.  Subscriptions till date are £19,076.  We are therefore in debt £2,360, which I hope your Committee will make good to us.   The deficit was as high as £3,000 but fully £600 subscriptions have since been received; they have practically ceased coming now.
The Secretaries of the Trades Union branches distinctly told us that their contributions had,  in accordance with practice, been sent to you for redistribution.
