RE-ORGANISATION OF BRITISH MEDICAL UNITS IN SPAIN
Re-organisation of the British Medical Units in Spain was carried out last Autumn as part of the Spanish Government's plan to obtain greater centralisation of authority and to equalise the distribution of supplies and personnel to the various hospitals and medical units.
Briefly it meant that the Spanish Medical Aid Committee's unit ceased to work as an autonomous unit and placed itself unreservedly in the hands of the Sanidad de Guerra, the central authority for all medical services on the Spanish fronts. It was the first foreign organisation to do so, and since then all foreign medical units have followed its lead.
In effect, therefore, the Spanish Medical Aid Committee now acts as a forwarding agent for supplies and personnel. It maintains its own representative, Miss Rosita Davson, however, in Barcelona; and she is in constant touch with the Sanidad, whose headquarters were moved from Valencia to Barcelona in November, 1937.
REQUISITIONS
Requests for supplies and personnel are now received in London, firstly from the Committee's representative, who keeps herself acquainted with the requirements of all hospitals and units with British personnel and equipment and who obtains the sanction of the Sanidad for her requisitions; secondly, from the Sanidad itself.
The Sanidad, whilst reserving to itself all ultimate decisions, has shown itself very willing to collaborate with the Committee and to accept its representations with regard to any particular requisition. In fact it cannot be over-emphasised that the changes have been carried out with the utmost
