Proposed Medical Unit for Spain.
I am In receipt of your letter of the 15th August, and thank you for the information you have given with regard to your discussion at the Spanish Embassy in Paris.
You are probably aware that daily contact has been in operation since the commencement of the conflict in Spain between the Spanish Embassy in Paris and the offices of the International Federation of Trade Unions. For your information I may say that at the instance of the Labour and Socialist International and the I.F.T.U., as far back as the 28th July the sending of a medical unit to Spain was considered, and steps were taken to ascertain the views of the Spanish representatives on this subject, as it was, of course, essential that their co-operation should be obtained if such a project was to operate successfully.
At that time the Spanish comrades were not convinced that the sending of a unit was necessary or desirable, but I have since obtained information, as the result of consultations which took place last week-end, which
