Dear Sirs,
While I was in Paris ten days ago I had a very friendly interview with Mr. Stolz and at his request I interviewed the Commercial Attache at the Spanish Embassy in Paris who has been detailed to arrange for medical help from Spain.
After discussion with Mr. Stolz and the Attache, I arranged that my Committee should be requested to send out to Alicante as speedily as possible another Unit. This Unit will proceed if possible to Madrid, but if communication with Madrid should be cut, then, the Attache said the Unit would work near Alicante.
Steps are now being taken to form this Unit which will be under the direction of Dr. Duncan Leys of Birmingham who, as well as being a first-class physician, is an able administrator and an active member of the Labour Movement in Birmingham.
We have on this occasion been fortunate enough to secure the services of some really first-class people. The Unit hopes to leave London on Saturday October 24th. Mr. Stolz has written to me to-day saying that the Solidarity Committee will be prepared to make a further grant of £1000, if the National Council of Labour will be prepared to give their endorsement.
I very much hope that we shall have the cordial support in this new venture, which has come as a direct request from the Spanish Embassy in Paris and which has the whole-hearted support of Mr. Stolz.
