Dear Sir Walter,
Your letter of 30th December only arrived yesterday at mid-day. I at once telegraphed you as follows:- "Your letter thirtieth postmarked Wembley thirtyfirst just arrived crossing mine twentyninth. Am acknowledging generosity in today's newspapers. Heartiest thanks. Hope may add your name Committee." The handsome co-operation of you and your colleagues was acknowledged at once in a letter to the Glasgow Herald, the Daily Herald and some thirty other newspapers throughout the country. I enclose a reprint of it.
I have now your letters of 31st December. Of course I am sorry that you do not see your way to join the Committee but I quite understand.
Spanish Medical Aid Unit.  I had heard vague rumours of what you say but had no idea that the situation was so serious. Dr. Brook wrote to me last month that he had been so overworked and worried that he was tendering his resignation. Perhaps I had better give you a summary of our own personnel.
Scottish Ambulance Unit.  We started with one Doctor, an American, as no British qualified Doctor was available; one medical student as his deputy; seven other medical students and ambulance men and ten driver-mechanics, plus one woman Miss Jacobsen as Liaison Officer, who has been frequently mentioned in the press. The entire personnel with six ambulances and one stores-waggon left here by road on 17th September. By the time they had reached Limoges, it was evident that harmonious co-operation with the Doctor was impossible. A deputation of three represented this by telephone to the Committee.
