Dear Mr. Smith,
INTERNATIONAL BRIGADE.
Referring to your letter of 28th October on the above subject the General Council have no fund from which grants could be made to the internees in question.
Our Spanish Appeal was specifically for the Spanish people.
Frankly, I am not quite clear, in view of the currency restrictions and our general relationships with the Vichy Government, as to how the International Brigade Committee which is raising funds is able to apply the money.
The General Council have not considered the question of representations, but the matter was discussed in the House on October 1st and I am enclosing an extract from Hansard of that date.
Yours sincerely,
Assistant Secretary.
