INTERNATIONAL BRIGADERS IN FRANCE
2,200 in the Concentration Camps need your help
Since March, 1939, thousands of Brigaders have been in the Concentration Camps in France. To-day we know there are 2,200 in three Camps, Le Vernet, Gurs, and Argeles.
Bad before the collapse of France their conditions are now terrible. They are without food, money, and need clothes. These extracts from a letter recently received by us reveal their plight:
From I. Ilitch, Camp du Vernet, Ariege, France.
..." We are glad to know that you think of us despite your own troubles. This shows that your friendship is as strong as ever and the help that you wish to send us will be even more appreciated by my comrades in the camp. ... As far as immediate help is concerned we shall be pleased to receive warm clothes and food. Above all we need trousers and shoes. ... It is not necessary to tell you of our situation—you know that in the actual circumstances we cannot be well. That is why your help must be rapid to be effective. We thank you in advance and ask you to pass on our greetings to all our friends. Salud."
It will be seen that their situation is desperate. Not only are their material conditions extremely bad, but they are in constant danger of being taken from the camps by the German and Italian Commission to an even worse fate.
Official arrangements have been made with the League of Nations Commission for us to send money to our members in France. This arrangement provides all the necessary guarantees that all moneys we send will reach our members.
The Internationals in France are in a desperate position. Their splendid record in the struggle against Fascism in Spain and in the countries from which they come demands that they should be given the maximum possible assistance by all who support the principles for which they fought in Spain.
Yours sincerely,
W. Rowe,
Secretary I.B.A.
