APPLICATION FOR MEDICAL AND NURSING VOLUNTEERS FOR SPAIN
I have seen the terms on which the International Solidarity Committee are prepared to make remuneration to volunteers for work in Spain at the Base Hospital.
I have no doubt that under the terms stated the Nursing volunteers could be procured, and I think an advertisement in the "Nursing Times" and the "Nursing Mirror" would probably bring the necessary applicants.
Doctors, especially surgeons, will be a great difficulty, and the pay and insurance offered would not be satisfactory or be attractive. If the amount could be made up to Six or Seven guineas a week, I have no doubt that you would get, not, perhaps, a first-class surgeon, but men with sufficient surgical knowledge to render very satisfactory work.
I have received one application (attached herewith) from a Dr. Sligo. He has had considerable surgical experience, has been reading for the higher degree of Surgery at Edinburgh, and has been a resident of the Manor House Hospital. Both from the point of view of surgical work and character he can be recommended. It will be noted that he has recently got married, and both the husband and wife are volunteering for service. Whether that will be a suitable arrangement for your Base Hospital is a matter for your consideration.
