Dear Sir Walter,
My first thought on receiving your letter of 22nd was to quote to you the aphorism of James VI of Scotland - James I of the United Kingdom, said to be carved above the entrance of Aberdeen University: "They say - what say they - let them say". It was fully answered by my circular to the press of 9th instant of which you have a copy. But the Memorandum signed by Dr. Crome and Messrs MacFarquhar and Linden is so grossly inaccurate that I have called a special Meeting of the executive Committee to deal with it. I shall let you know what action is decided upon.
Meanwhile I may say that it is nothing less than a piece of impertinence and entirely contrary to what we have been told throughout of the opinion of our work by the responsible heads of the Spanish Government. They send me from time to time copies of their official newspapers in which the Unit and its work are mentioned. For your information I enclose two of these - Politica of 9th February, most of the fourth page of which is taken up with praise of the Unit and its work, and Estampa of 20th March. What they say of Miss Jacobsen and the Unit is so extravagently flattering that I could not think of sending translations of passages for insertion in the British press.
I am asking the Spanish Ambassador in London, however, for a confidential report on his Government's opinion and shall write you again.
