MEMORANDUM NO. 2.
TO THE MEMBERS OF THE SPANISH MEDICAL AID COMMITTEE
In the previous memorandum we cited in brief some of the ills responsible for the unit's discontent. In the present memorandum we wish to sketch briefly the general course along which the unit as a whole wishes to travel.
FIRSTLY - In our desire to fulfil the terms of our contracts, and to bring to an immediate cessation the hostile attitude of the two sides in the unit, we who are the unquestioned majority have adopted a very compromising and conciliatory attitude towards the minority. Rather than have any bitterness rankling in their hearts, and thus having a distasteful disabling undercurrent of disharmony within the unit, we, who have fought to right the wrongs in the unit, have decided to curb our impatience just a little longer, i.e. the necessary week to a fortnight, until the London Committee, now fully aware of what is wanted and necessary, gives the unit the legal right to do as it deems expedient.
Thus to soothe the defeated administration clique, we have chosen temporarily a Committee to assist in the administration of the hospital, and to this Committee, in the capacity of its Chairman, during its existence, we have elected Cochrane, the retiring administrator's deputy.
While the present committee is a makeshift affair whose purpose is to act as a coalition cabinet, and to get the unit into motion in the meantime, we actually want a fully representative and democratic type of organisation based on the following lines :-
a) - One member from each department shall be elected to the committee by that department :-
Medical
Nursing
Transportation and Orderlies
Interpreters and Secretaries
Kitchen.
b) - The committee in turn will elect a Chairman who will execute the wishes of the committee and of the unit, and of the London Committee via the Granen Committee.
c) - This committee will also elect from amongst its members one to take over the duties of secretary.
The new administration described above would take overall the duties of the previous authority and of Barcelona, and pledges itself to work ceaselessly for the benefit of this animate gesture to the Spanish Workers.
