Some time ago we were asked by Sir Stafford Cripps to draw up a Memorandum on "Help for Spain" for submission to the Spain Campaign Committee of the Labour Party.
You may like to read the enclosed opinions on it of -
(1) the Counsellor to the Spanish Embassy,
(2) the former Chairman of the Spanish National Food Commission, now Agricultural Attache, and
(3) the Commercial Attache.
Unfortunately the Memorandum is seventy pages long - it covers almost the whole field - and we are short of copies.   Otherwise I might inflict one on you...
You will see from the enclosed letters the precise importance the Spanish Authorities attach to the Memorandum.
They want to distribute in Spain copies of a Spanish translation.
I rashly undertook to get it translated, - as also the further Memorandum which as you will see from the Counsellor's letter, we have been asked to do.
The two Memoranda may come to almost the length of a book. They are, indeed, designed as a "blue print for anti-Fascists".
That is one of the reasons why this is a begging letter.
For this translation is going to cost money. None of our volunteers knows Spanish well enough to do it.
Begging letters are difficult to write and irksome to read. They are often put in the waste paper basket, or just glanced at.
In this case, however, will you overcome such impulses - even against your better judgment - and listen to our reason for begging from you?:-
