I.C.3
TRADES UNION CONGRESS.
INTER-DEPARTMENTAL CORRESPONDENCE.
From G. STOLZ
To Mr H.V. Tewson.
Department
Date 17th June, 1942.
SUBJECT.
14th of APRIL FUND
In reply to your note of the 12th June, concerning the above fund, I would like to inform you that I received today, from the Secretary of the Trade Union Group of Spanish Workers, the following information:
"The "Juventud Española" (Spanish Youth) in London is an organisation of open communist tendency, as are all whose seat is in the "Hogar Español", established at 22, Inverness Terrace. An eminent member of this "Juventud Española" is a certain Martorell, who at the celebration held in the "Hogar Espanol", on the occasion of the death of Jose Diaz, Secretary of the Communist Party in Spain, spoke on behalf of the Communist Party.
I know of the circulars which have been sent out to different places asking for money to help the refugees which are in concentration camps in France. They collected a lot of money but it was all used for propaganda of the Communist Party. I can also think this in consequence of a collection of the Spanish Communists in New York. Under the pretext to hire a ship, in order to fetch Spanish refugees from France, they formed a committee and succeeded in getting Mrs Roosevelt on it. It was exposed and Mrs Roosevelt and all the people who had believed in the bona-fide of the communist initiative retired. The result was that the ship never came out and in New York this affair made quite a scandal.
Those who know how the communists are acting must not care for this which is coming out of the "Hogar Espanol". There are also people in the "Hogar Español" who are not communists but the organisation is following the communist tendency the same as they are claiming unity, dividing every organisation if their unity is not for their profit.
When there are English organisations, which desire to help these people in the concentration camps in France, they should see whether they can do it directly or with the help of people who have their full
