Further to my previous letter on this subject in which I stated that I was making further enquiries into this matter, for your personal information I am sending the following report from the Secretary of the Trade Union Group of Spanish workers which has been received in response to an enquiry from the International Federation of Trade Unions.
"The 'Juventud Espanola' (Spanish Youth) in London is an organisation of open communist tendency, as are all whose seat is in the 'Hogar Espanol', established at 22, Inverness Terrace. An eminent member of this 'Juventud Espanola', is a certain Martorell, who at the celebration held in the 'Hogar Espanol', on the occasion of the death of Jose Diaz, Secretary of the Communist Party in Spain, spoke on behalf of the Communist Party.
I know of the circulars which have been sent out to different places asking for money to help the refugees which are in concentration camps in France. I am convinced however that the best part of the money, which will be collected, will be used for Communist propaganda in this country. I am inclined to think this following what happened to one collection which they made in Spain. It was for construction of a ship in order to replace the "Konsomol" which was sunk on a voyage she made to Spain in the time of the war of our country. They collected a lot of money but it was all used for propaganda of the Communist Party. I can also think this in consequence of a collection of the Spanish Communists in New York.
