9th December 1938.
Mr. H.V. Tewson,
Dear Comrade Tewson,
Further to our correspondence regarding a special Christmas and New Year distribution in Spain, I would now inform you that we have agreed with Santiago on the lines already communicated to you. On the basis of your own suggestion, however, it has been decided that, instead of sending special parcels, the International Solidarity Fund will increase its consignments in the coming weeks, so that a wider distribution of ordinary food is possible in Christmas and New Year weeks.
In addition, we are sending down a special consignment of chocolate and tobacco, which will allow of our Committee distributing these extra articles on a larger scale during the coming weeks.
In this connection I cannot help expressing my profound astonishment at hearing from Mrs. Adams that Comrade Gillies, on behalf of the Labour Party, is arranging with some people in the Spanish Embassy (I think also under the strong pressure of Ellen Wilkinson) for a special Christmas distribution to be made in Spain under the auspices of the National Committee for Aid to Spain.
As you know, I have on repeated occasions explained that this National Committee for Aid to Spain, although it has an official character, is run by a Communist General Secretary and is undoubtedly carried on with Communist aims. We have made it clear time and time
