Mr. Tewson,
The Trades Union Congress,
Transport House,
Smith Square,
LONDON. S.W.1.
Dear Sir,
Confirming our telephonic conversation with you this morning, we beg to advise having received an intimation from our Rouen Depot to the effect that the goods shipped by s.s. CWS PROGRESS from Garston to Rouen last month, namely, Dried Cod, Soap, Biscuits and Cod Liver Oil are held up at Cerbere, owing to the inability of the Agent to obtain settlement from Spain of previous outstanding charges for rail from Rouen to Cerbere.
As indicated, the amount involved is Fr. 48,000 namely, £271 at today's rate of exchange, and acting upon your instructions, we are arranging for the sum in question to be remitted by our Rouen Depot. Demurrage is, of course, being incurred whilst the goods are lying at Cerbere, and doubtless a small charge for this item will also have to be settled, and we will let you know the precise amount when detailed information is in our possession.
Doubtless similar difficulties will arise in connection with the 750 tons Potatoes which we purpose shipping on the 18th instant, and in the event of a demand for settlement of inland carriage being made on our Rouen people, we will settle as desired.
Yours faithfully,
E. Winstanley
Export Department.
P.T.O.
