COPY FOR INFORMATION OF
31st January, 1939.
To the General Secretary of the Union named in the address.
Ref. C.95.(1938-39).
Dear Sir,
DEMOCRATIC SPAIN STILL NEEDS FOOD
SCOTTISH FOODSHIP COLLECTING SCHEME
For over two years Spain has dramatically arrested the attention of all Democracies: for over two years the plight of the civilian population has aroused the conscience of all democrats. Lacking food, clothing, and medical supplies the magnificence of their morale commands our ready response to their clamant call for assistance.
The General Council is organising a Scottish Foodship and a scheme specially designed for obtaining contributions from those willing to assist has been launched. In the furtherance of this scheme the General Council will continue close contact with the National Council of Labour, whose efforts to relieve distress in Spain will therefore be supplemented.
I have sent to you under separate cover..... Books containing 3d. vouchers and ..... containing 1/- vouchers, which number of books is estimated to be sufficient for one to be sent to each of your branches in Scotland. You are requested specially to circularise these branches. Pending the maturing of the scheme your Union is asked also to make grants from its funds.
To assist in administration a note is attached outlining the procedure which it is hoped your Union will follow.
It is fully realised that your Union and many of its members will have contributed already, and are continuing to contribute, to funds for the relief of Democratic Spain. But food is so desperately needed that intensified efforts are imperative. These efforts must continue until the dire necessity of our Spanish Comrades no longer stands out as a reproach to us all.
You are asked to act quickly. The destiny of all peace-loving and democratic peoples may be endangered by hesitation.
Yours faithfully,
William Elger
Secretary.
