Mr. H. V. Tewson,
LONDON.
Dear Tewson,
In accordance with your request of Friday last, I give you below information about what has been done up till now for the Spanish comrades by the International Solidarity Fund.
Right at the beginning, in response to the urgent need, the first funds received were used to send anti-gangrene and anti-tetanus serum to Spain, the greater part of which, about 7,000 ampoules anti-gangrene and 12,000 anti-tetanus, was sent from Paris. The average price at which we bought the ampoules at different French laboratories was ten French francs each. Several consignments of serum were also sent from Belgium, these being paid for out of that part of our fund which was left in Belgium in order to purchase goods on the spot.
Various demands for food and medical supplies were then received from Catalonia, the North of Spain and Madrid. Our French Trade Unions, which were also collecting funds for the relief of Spain, spontaneously organised in the South of France, both on the Basque and Catalonian frontiers, a permanent system of transport of goods to the distressed areas; three shiploads of supplies were sent to Bilbao, Santander and Irun, and several trainloads were sent to the same places and through Catalonia. These consignments mainly consisted of rice, potatoes, flour, sugar, bacon and olive oil.
