"MILK FOR SPAIN" FUND: SECOND APPEAL

Dear Secretary,
It is our privilege and duty to make a new Appeal on behalf of the "Milk for Spain" Fund.
The response to our first Appeal was very encouraging indeed. The milk and milk powder which was sent to Spain has been gratefully acknowledged by our Spanish comrades. At the end of May, £6,841 2s. 6d. had been received at Transport House from individuals, Labour Parties, Trade Unions, and various Demonstrations held under the auspices of the Committee in London and the Provinces. At the offices of the Co-operative Union in Manchester, £13,490 1s. 6d. had been received in the form of grants from Committees of Management, the proceeds of the sale of tokens, and individual gifts from Co-operative, Trade Union, and other organisations, making a grand total of £20,331 4s. 0d. The fund now exceeds £21,000. It has all been spent, even overspent. There is desperate need for more money.
Reports as to how distribution has been made are received from Señor Enrique Santiago, the Secretary of the Spanish Committee of the International Solidarity Fund, appointed by and responsible to the Executive Committees of the Spanish Socialist Party and the Spanish General Union of Workers.
Milk has been sent to the Hospitals, Child and Maternity Centres and Municipal Kitchens of Madrid; to the Child Welfare Centres of the Ministry of Health and the National Council of Refugee Children; to the refugees, children, and the aged, who are under the care of the Assistencia Social; to the General Hospital and Hospital Clinic in Barcelona; to the Military Hospital at Onteniente (equipped and maintained by the International Solidarity Fund), and to other Institutions.
The "Milk for Spain" Fund has also encouraged Señor Santiago to organise a free distribution of milk to children attending elementary schools in Barcelona.
Two years of supreme heroism and self-sacrifice have evoked unreserved admiration throughout the world for the Spanish people. Their Government is still denied the freedom to buy arms for the defence of Republican institutions. The Army fights on with almost incredible endurance against overwhelming odds. The people of Spain, with health and strength impaired after two long years of physical and mental suffering, aggravated by the horrors of bombardment from the air, are now confronted by a plot to starve them through the merciless and unhindered destruction even of British ships carrying the essentials of life. They look to us to defeat this policy, so far as it lies in our power, and to continue that aid which we have been giving them through the "Milk for Spain" Fund. We must not, we will not disappoint them. The milk is being sent by rail or road.
