HOMES FOR SPANISH ORPHANS
Further to our telephone conversations with you in regard to the possibility of a meeting between representatives of the Mineworkers' Federation and Comrade Schevenels on the question of homes for Spanish orphans, I have now received a letter from the Mineworkers' Federation in which they state that they desire immediate arrangements to be put in hand for the opening of two homes in Spain, each to accommodate 100 children. They would leave the matter over until they had an opportunity of meeting Comrade Schevenels at Blackpool, but they are anxious to be in a position to report to our Congress that the scheme has already been launched and that progress has been made with this first instalment.
Consequently, I would be very glad if you would take the earliest possible opportunity of getting into direct contact with Santiago, and such other channels as you may feel necessary, with a view to the establishment of the two homes in question.
The Mineworkers' Federation state that the capital sum for endowment will be discussed with Comrade Schevenels at Blackpool, but they will, of course, be prepared to give an immediate guarantee in respect of the sums required for equipping the homes and maintaining them for, say, three months.
