ASSISTANCE FOR SPAIN.
The National Council of Labour have seen reports to the effect that your Union is making a voluntary levy for the purpose of providing lorries, etc. for Spain.
I do not know how far the matter has progressed, but the General Council and the Labour Party Executive are anxious that as far as possible funds which are raised in this country for the purchase of any commodities should be credited to the International Solidarity Fund for which our Movement is responsible, and that the machinery at the disposal of the fund should be utilised for distributive purposes.
You will probably be aware that the Mineworkers' Federation of Great Britain have decided upon a levy and over £60,000 has so far been received. The money is raised for the special purpose of providing homes for refugee dependents of the Asturian miners and a similar request was made to the Mineworkers' Federation that assistance so given should be through the International Solidarity Fund.
The response of the Mineworkers' Federation was to appoint their Committee charged with the administration of their fund to meet us here in order that the position could be examined.
