NEUTRALITY IS A CRIME.
IT IS A BETRAYAL OF THE SPANISH PROLETARIAN REVOLUTION.
Spain to-day presents a curious paradox. On every hand we meet with left Republican elements, some of them of real political significance, which show themselves to be in agreement with us when they say that the problem in Spain to-day is that of socialism or fascism. On the other hand there are so-called marxist elements who see the problem as that of democracy or fascism. The result is that these republicans appear to be much more marxist then the others who place themselves openly on the right of the republicans.
Whether we like it or not, to put the question this way: democracy or fascism? means recognising the continued existence of the capitalist regime. Between democracy or fascism we naturally choose democracy, not because it gives us any satisfaction as an end, but because it is a means by which to reach our revolutionary ends. We, as revolutionary marxists, make every use of bourgeois democracy in order to replace it by a higher and more truly democratic regime: socialism.
Bourgeois democracy, as we have said time and again, is the veil which covers capitalist dictatorship over the proletariat, the exploitation of one class by another. Democracy and fascism are, in short, opposite aspects of the same social regime. On the other hand it is beyond any doubt that fascism is the consequence of the breakdown of bourgeois democracy. In short, whoever reduces the problem of our time to the choice between democracy and fascism, however much they may call themselves socialists or communists, are excellent defenders of the continued existence of the bourgeois regime.
This seems to us a basic truth for all countries in the present historical period. Applied to Spain, where we are in the midst of a civil war, a revolution, this truth becomes an incontestable reality. To put the problem in Spain to-day as a choice between democracy or fascism is to become the ally of fascism. Has republican democracy perhaps proved itself capable of preventing the preparations and the advance of fascism? Was not the military fascist rising a consequence of the failure of the republicans? As we have so often tried to point out, democratic experience has been completely negative in Spain.
