Dear Sirs,
We regret to inform you that there is an error in our insurance cover note dated the 28th instant, in respect of Food Stuffs shipped by ss HARTBRIDGE from Newcastle to Oran for Barcelona. The value of the 170 cases Corned Beef should read £270 and not £780, and we are accordingly attaching hereto amended cover note and shall be glad if you will return the other at your earliest convenience.
We have now received an explanation from the loading brokers at Newcastle regarding the endorsement which appears on the Bill of Lading, and give you below copy of their observations -
"With regard to the endorsement on the Bills of Lading, this is in accordance with instructions from our solicitors as the owner of this steamer declined to proceed to Barcelona or any other South Spanish port as he alleged they were dangerous.
The Bills of Lading were signed and the freight duly paid on the basis of the charter party rate but under protest and the matter is now in the hands of our solicitors."
