Help for Workers of Spain Fund (report)

              HELP FOR WORKERS OF SPAIN FUND.
1. Within a few days of the Spanish rebellion breaking out, [after consultation with Mr. Middleton and members of the Finance and General Purposes Committee,] the Fund was opened in this country on 27th July.
2. The General Council headed the Fund with £1,000 and to date the amount received in this country is £10,546.13.1. Many Unions have subscribed generously to the Fund, but in several cases, owing to the holidays, Executives have not met and their contributions and will be expected [coming] later... (A). 3. Large numbers of individual subscriptions are arriving at the office and special arrangements have had to be made to cope with these. Every amount from any organisation or individual is acknowledged by official receipt which is despatched upon the day of receipt of the donation.
4. Some Unions have made definite arrangements for workshop collections to be taken amongst their members, [and the General Council staff and officials are contributing weekly 1% of their salaries. The Labour Party staff have a similar proposal under consideration] and by publicity in the "Herald" we are attempting to secure the regular taking of such collections.
It is evident that the [present] fighting will go on for some time and when comparative calm has been restored it will be then that the measure of individual distress will be most noticeable. We are therefore anxious that there should be a regular income to the Fund to meet these conditions and although the requests of our comrades in Spain are being met with willingness, the International Joint Committee have clearly in their minds the necessity for the wisest administration of the Fund, and the securing of regular contributions in order to meet future calls.
