8th May, 1939.
The Under Secretary of State,
MANUEL URRUTIA AND MARCELINO GONZALEZ.
I understand that Mr. Urrutia of 12, Cable Street, E.1. and Mr. Gonzalez of Evelyn House, Great Orex Street, E. has applied to you for an extension of their permit to remain in the United Kingdom after the 14th of May.
I would be extremely glad if you would be good enough to give favourable consideration to this application. Both Mr. Urrutia and Mr. Gonzalez are engaged in this country by the Former Spanish Republican Government in connection with the Spanish Mercantile Marine, and as a consequence their return to Spanish territory would mean immediate arrest and confinement to a concentration camp.
Both Mr. Urrutia and Gonzalez have sufficient money in this country to enable them to maintain themselves and their families for a considerable time, and an extension of their permit to remain in this country for a period of say six months would enable them to work out a basis for their future.
