Mr. W. Gillies,
The reason for this letter is to keep you informed of what has happened to my poor wife, Mrs. Gwedolyn Admas de Puertas [Gwendolyn Adams de Puertas], on her return to Spain. Mr. W. Schevenels will surely have informed you already, in case it should be possible for you to intervene in her favour with some influential person in Spain.
I will give you all the details which I have been able to obtain. She was arrested on November 4, the fifth day after her arrival in Figueras, on the charge of having engaged in espionage on behalf of the "reds", of making communist propaganda - which is absolutely false and most distressing, as you who knew her can judge for yourself. There is some truth in the other accusations, which are less important, although they weigh nevertheless; she is accused of having been photographed with President Companys of the Generalite' de Catalogne and other "red" personalities, of having held conferences in England, of having written Spanish and foreign reviews, of having accompanied English delegations in Spain etc. The person who has supplied me with these particulars is employed by the Spanish Red Cross, which made enquiries of the Captain of the Civil Guard in Figueras, and added that her case is very serious.
It is lamentable, dear comrade, to think that after having done so much humanitarian work, without bias, she should be persecuted on ignoble and absolutely false charges, and the attempt made to find evil in what she did; for there were reasons, as you know, why the republican authorities were represented at the opening of canteens for children, and why they received with hospitality the generous delegations of English donors.
She returned to Spain with the caravan organised by the Spanish Red Cross, and you can undoubtedly imagine what were the motives which decided us to return to our home. We had been assured that, as we had done nothing with which to reproach ourselves, we could return in peace and nothing would happen to us,
