On the advice of Sr. Ramos Oliveira and as Captain and Engineer Inspectors of the Spanish ships, administered by the Mid-Atlantic Shipping Co. Ltd., we are writing to inform you of the miserable situation that the Spanish sailors find themselves in this country and if possible to try and find some solution to this situation.
The Mid-Atlantic Shipping Co. Ltd. ceased the administration of these vessels owing to the recognition of Franco by the British Government. The crews of these ships who were faithfully serving the Spanish Republican Government are now left in very poor circunstances, indeed, and moreover with the imminent risk of being deported from this country by the authorities and sent to Spain where some of them will, without doubt, be imprisoned and the rest will be in actual danger of losing their lives.
We have been informed that some of this sailors at Cardiff and Belfast, confronted with this future, have appealed to the Trade Union Organisations in their respective localities which have solved their situation with the authorities in the above mentioned ports and have also been kind enough to give them a small weekly allowance.
