              TRANSLATION OF LETTER FROM WENCESLAO CARRILLO.
London, 28th February, 1940.
Comrade Walter Citrine, 
My dear Friend,
Some time ago I took the liberty of writing to you to bring to your attention that Ricardo Zabalza, Secretary of the National Landworkers' Federation, had been condemned to death in Spain. The person who then gave me the report, anticipated events since, it appeals, he had not been tried. Now, I am assured, this is the case and it is feared, he has been condemned to death.
Another comrade who has received the same penalty is Francisco de Toro, former Secretary of the National Union of Railwaymen, and a Member of the Cortes.
I have been asked by a very large number of comrades to approach you with a request that you exert your influence with a view to these sentences not being carried out. I assure you that neither of these comrades, (nor many others who have already been executed, or other who are awaiting the same sentence or something like it) has committed any other offence than to have defended the laws of the Republic, without having stained his hands with blood or committed common crimes of any sort. If you will help us to save these lives, you can be assured that nobody will be able to tell you that the men are common murderers or anything like that. They have been condemned to death for being Socialists; nothing but for being Socialists.
