Dear Lord Halifax,
LARGO CABALLERO AND MANUEL CORDERO.
During the earlier period of this year correspondence passed between us with reference to the possibility of saving the lives of Spanish Trade Unionists who had been imprisoned and condemned to death. You were good enough to respond sympathetically to our appeal, and to use all the means in your power to induce the Franco Government to show clemency to these men. At the same time you warned us that time would have to elapse before British influence could regain its normal weight with the present rulers of Spain so far as the victims of political persecution were concerned. We now take the liberty of approaching you with regard to the following cases.
The first concerns
LARGO CABALLERO,
the Secretary of the Spanish T.U.C. and one-time Prime Minister of Spain, who we see from the Press has been handed over by the Vichy Government to General Franco.
The other case concerns
MANUEL CORDERO,
who was an old and valuable member of the Executive Committee of the Spanish T.U.C. He was believed to have got away to South America, but we now have a report stating that he has been arrested in Lisbon when on his way from
P.T.O.
