Dear Sir Walter,
THE SPANISH WAR.
I have to acquaint you of the following resolution, which was passed at our last Annual Conference, held over Easter, 1939:
"THIS CONFERENCE views the victory of International Fascism over the Republican Government of Spain with profound sorrow, but records its belief that the defeat of the Spanish People is merely of a temporary character. The people who have struggled so valiantly for two-and-a-half years against tremendous odds are not finally suppressed but will rise again. CONFERENCE RECORDS its feeling of shame at the disgraceful part played by the British Government in assisting to bring about this defeat for Democracy. The present situation, however, calls for even greater efforts of support and solidarity than ever before. CONFERENCE, therefore, CALLS UPON the organised Labour Movement to:
"(i) Organise campaigns for:
(1) Foodships for the relief of refugees presently incarcerated in France;
(2) The means of transport to those countries where refuge has been offered to those who find it impossible to return to Spain;
(ii) Redouble our efforts to force the British Government to:
(a) Allocate funds to provide more reasonable facilities for living in the present refugee camp in France;
(b) Provide facilities on land controlled by the British Government for the settlement of refugees.
