TRANSLATION OF LETTER RECEIVED FROM THE U.G.T., BARCELONA. DATED 20th JUNE 1938.
Dear Comrade,
The Executive Commission of the U.G.T. of Spain feels that it must inconvenience you with the present letter; but it is necessary for you to be acquainted with the opinion which is held not only by the U.G.T. itself, but by the two million members which make up our Trade Union Centre, and with the state of morale of all our people in the fight which is being maintained against the foreign invasion, in defence of the Republican democracy, for our independence and for peace.
We observe with regret how certain personalities of the International Labour Movement, and the journals of the great British Labour Party, are being influenced by the intensive campaign and manoeuvres which are being conducted in the international sphere by reactionary elements of British and French Conservatism in particular - a campaign which is leading up to a settlement of the Spanish dispute by what they call "mediation", but what is nothing but capitulation and surrender.
We must inform you that the hopes which the above mentioned campaign may awaken in the sections of the
