Dear Comrade,
SPAIN: WITHDRAWAL OF FOREIGN VOLUNTEERS
We have received your letter of October 15 and thank you for it.
The withdrawal by the Spanish Government of the foreign volunteers who have been fighting in their forces is an act of which we fully realise the importance. Equally we appreciate that the hard conditions of your struggle aggravated even more by the approach of winter, necessitate the fullest possible help from outside and especially relief for the sufferings of your women and children and old people.
We can assure you that the situation in Republican Spain is receiving continual attention in our international discussions. I may remind you that only last week there was held in Paris a meeting of the International Federation of Trade Unions, attended by representatives of your Spanish U.G.T., and at this meeting the situation in Spain, since the withdrawal of volunteers on the republican side, was one of the principal subjects. It is further intended that another meeting in consultation with the Labour and Socialist International shall be called at an early date. This will serve to show you that your problems are constantly under review in our international organisations.
