Proposed Deputation.
With further reference to your letter of the 17th instant, which arrived whilst I was attending a meeting of the International Federation of Trade Unions, I have to say that I have given the matter very careful consideration and have come to the conclusion that the proposed deputation would not serve any useful purpose.
Perhaps you are not aware that the General Council of the Trades Union Congress is in the closest possible touch with the Spanish situation. It has contacts direct with the representatives of the Spanish Trade Unions and Socialist Party, and also with the official representatives of the Spanish Government.
You will probably have seen from the newspapers that the Secretary of the International Federation of Trade Unions has only recently returned from Spain and has furnished an exhaustive report to the members of the Executive of the I.F.T.U.  The I.F.T.U. and the Labour and Socialist International have two experienced representatives in Spain who furnish them with regular and intimate reports on the events which are taking place.
