Luxembourg, le 3th of november 1937
Sir Walter CITRINE
LONDON
Dear Comrade Citrine,
Will you be kind enough to excuse me if I only answer to-day at your charming letter, which I got just before the holy-days. But we were, just during this days, so busy that I could not write, I had to help my husband for his work, and you will understand it, when I tell you that probably to-morrow my husband will be Minister in the new Luxembourg Government.
Concerning the speech of our friend Caballero, I took the most important parts from the short-hand report, published by the oficiel paper of the UGT from the province Valencia, "La Correspondencia de Valencia" a daily paper which I receive regularly by my friends of the UGT. This paper is the onliest in Valencia that publishs the news and informations of the old UGT, the other papers, included the socialist papers, only give the informations of the UGT presided by Gonzalez Pena. But the socialist evening paper of the province Alicante is also from the political tendence of Caballero, and published the speech. By chance I got also this paper and so I can send you a copy or this much intersting speech, hoping that it will be usefull to you. At the same time I send you a manifest, published by Caballero and the UGT and sent to the Spanish Trades- Union-Federations. Unfortunately I have no time to translate it,but I hope you will easely find somebody to translate it for you I think, it is important that the president of the I.F.T.U. knows the facts, the Ugt gives in his letter.
I thought to translate also the speech Caballero was intended to give in Alicante the 24 of October, and the other, Tomas had to give in Valencia the same day, but after the Madrid-speech,the Governement forbid all public political speeches.
The situation of Caballero and the friends of the old and authentic UGT is very critical. Just this morning I got a letter from Tomas, that could cross the Spanish frontier without being censured, and the letter was acompanied by some copies and documents in which I could read that really the persecution of our friends is serious. For instance, Caballero had to go to another town near Valencia, the 23th of October only to see some friends and to have lunch with them. But on the road the police interdict him to leave the town, and this by order of the Director of the police, a socialist, member of the same party as Caballero. Next day this interdiction was repealed, but if I had not the protest-letter, Caballero sent to the president of the Parliament, I could hardly believe such a thing.
Is it not a pity to see such a struggle between men who are in the same organisation? And the whole trouble
