Dear Comrade,
We are glad to note that on Tuesday, August 25th, the National Joint Council of Labour will be meeting to consider the Spanish situation. We are sure that you share our anxiety with regard to the gravity of the position in Spain.
We hope that your organisation will use its influence in the Joint Council meeting to ensure that the most speedy and adequate measures shall be taken to bring behind the heroic fight of the Spanish people the fullest support of all those in Britain who stand for democracy and peace.
We believe that the hypocritical policy of "neutrality" as practiced by the National Government has in no small measure assisted the Spanish Fascist rebels in their campaign. The key to the success of the Spanish people's fight lies in Britain. The National Government has the power and the political influence that could force the organisers of civil war in Spain and war in Europe to retreat tomorrow. It is not too late now to force the National Government to end its policy of "neutrality" and to give the Spanish Government the fullest assistance.
We believe that if the National Joint Council presented an ultimatum to the National Government demanding that Parliament be immediately convened, that
