CENTRAL COMMITTEE
16 KING STREET, COVENT GARDEN
LONDON. W.C.2
Telephone: TEMple Bar 4277 14th November, 1936,
Dear Comrade,
Enclosed you will find the special picture page that appeared in the "Daily Worker" on Thursday, November 12th.
I am sending it to you in order to direct your attention to the havoc that the Spanish fascists are bringing on the children of the Spanish people.
I am sure that you, like all those who have seen this picture, cannot remain unmoved at the challenge they issue to all of us in the British Labour Movement, to really organise the mass of the British people for every practical form of assistance to the Spanish Government.
I am sure that you are far from satisfied with what the official Labour Movement has yet attempted.
It was on July 18th that the Civil War was forced on the Spanish people by the Fascists -- it is now November! Not one central official demonstration has been organised by the Labour Party or Trade Union Congress on behalf of the Spanish people!
Comrade Blum made an important speech to the French Socialist Party Conference last weekend, in which he is reported to have declared his readiness to supply arms for Spain if the British Government would also do this.
This is also a challenge to us in the Labour Movement in Britain.
May I suggest that you use your influence with every organisation with which you are connected to demand that immediately the Labour Party and Trade Union Congress shall organise mass demonstrations all over Britain for arms for Spain.
Yours fraternally,
Harry Pollitt
