Dear Sir Walter,
Re Spain
I am duly in receipt of your letter of the 31st ulto.
While I am not entirely free in the sense of being away just now for an indefinite period, that in itself would not be an insurmountable obstacle to my taking on the job mentioned in your letter.
What decides me is the conviction that without some knowledge of the Spanish language, if not of the country itself, my value as an "observer" would hardly justify the expenditure involved.
To be able to supply up to-date and independent reports on events
