INDEPENDENT LABOUR PARTY NATIONAL ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL
35, ST. BRIDE STREET, LONDON, E.C.4.
SAVE SPANISH WORKING CLASS REVOLUTIONARIES :
We desire above all things the victory of Republican Spain over the forces of Spanish and International Fascism. Right from the beginning of the struggle we have used all our efforts to assist our Spanish comrades in every possible way and we are prepared to continue ourselves, and to use our utmost efforts to influence the International Working Class, to help the Spanish workers.
In spite of the gravity of the military situation in Spain we believe that, even now, the magnificent heroism of the Spanish workers and peasants will prevail against the forces of Franco, but there is one indispensable condition and that is working class unity. Our absolute belief in this compels us to issue the following document although we realise that we shall be misunderstood and probably vilified in certain quarters. We believe steadfastly in the historic destiny of our class and prefer to state the truth in an attempt to remedy an intolerable abuse rather than, by our silence, to become accomplices in a repression which is destroying the foundations of working class unity and action.
For more than a year 3,000 anti-Fascist workers have been kept in prison by the Spanish Republican Government. They consist of members of the C.N.T./F.A.I., the U.G.T., Left Socialists and the P.O.U.M. (Spanish Workers'Party of Marxist Unity). Those men and women were among those who stemmed the tide of Fascism. Only July 19th, 1936, the armed workers of the C.N.T./F.A.I. and the P.O.U.M. defeated the Fascists in Catalonia and many other parts of Spain; on July 19th, 1938, many of those same workers are in prison in Barcelona and an act of accusation has been produced against the members of the Executive Committee of the P.O.U.M. which will form the basis of the prosecution in the forthcoming trial at the Central Tribunal of Espionage and High Treason.
It will be remembered that the members of the Executive Committee of the P.O.U.M. were imprisoned on June 17th last year. The Political Secretary of the Party, Andres Nin, who had been Minister of Justice in the first United Anti-Fascist Government of Catalonia, was taken to Madrid on July 16th. He was transferred to a secret prison in the Calle de Alcala de Honares and was taken out of this prison on July 22nd by a group of armed men. After his disappearance we were informed by Senor Irujo, Minister for Justice, and Senor Zugazagoitia, Home Secretary, that the Spanish Govornmont was not responsible for his arrest and was undertaking researches in order to discover his whereabouts. Andres Nin was taken from the secret prison by agents of the G.P.O. and in common with many others of the best working class revolutionaries has disappeared, probably for ever.
There remain in prison in Barcelona the following members of the Executive Committee of tho P.O.U.M.:
Gorkin, Andrade, Arquez, Pascual, Rovira, David Rey, Bonel and Escudere (Editor of "La Batalla").
