International conference on Spain. 1937, March 10-11 : summary of speeches

              INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SPAIN HELD MARCH 10TH & 11TH 1937 AT CENTRAL HALL, WESTMINSTER.
SUMMARY OF SPEECHES. 
SIR WALTER CITRINE opening the Conference said that it had been called at the request of the Spanish Comrades. They had asked for a Conference of an all-in character, which meant bringing into association with them all anti-Fascist organisations. After mature deliberation the Executive had decided that such a Congress would not commend itself to the organisations affiliated to the two International bodies, so that consequently a Conference was called only of organisations affiliated to these; [two International bodies,] but they were all requested to make the delegation as large as possible so that the Conference would be fully representative.
The First speaker was:-
PASCUAL TOMAS.  Mentioned that they thought they should have had an all-in conference even if composed of Catholics, Anarchists, Communists with the Socialists. However they accepted the decision that was taken. Spain needs something more than expressions of Solidarity and Relief. Those things were not sufficient. They wanted the power to put up greater force than the Fascists possessed, for tanks, airoplanes and war materials were coming from the anti-Fascist countries.
In Italy [the] European Democracy [is] confined itself to protests. Their resistance collapsed. They will [not] be prepared to agree to the withdrawal of all volunteers from Spain. They were prepared to be left alone to face the rebels. 
Italian and German ships were to control the Mediteranean [Mediterranean] coast of Spain and these were the ships which were helping Franco. He made the following suggestions:
