Letter

Dear Sir Walter, 
My attention has been called to two pamphlets recently issued by the National Council of Labour from Transport House. They are "The Drama of Spain" by A. Ramos Oliveira, and "Catholics and the Civil War in Spain".    They would seem to be official publications of the Labour Party and their appearance raises questions which I wish to discuss with you.
The Hierarchy of the Catholic Church in this country have always tried to forestall any attempt to create conflict between the lawful political and religious allegiances of the faithful.    That was clear when some members of the Labour Party seemed to share in the condemnation of "Socialism" by the Catholic Church, [but] the Bishops would not allow Catholics to be severed from Labour because of a mere name, in the confidence that in fact its "Socialism" would prove to be Social Reform.     I mention  the matter to show that they have always tried to be fair in all that concerns lawful political differences of opinion.    As for myself in my personal attitude, I am no politician, but, if anything, I should favour labour, being the son of a working man.
I hope, therefore that you will not think that I am hostile to the Labour Party when I take serious objection to the two pamphlets I have named, and ask for their withdrawal.     Many factors are involved in the Spanish struggle
