MAY DAY, which originated as an International Demonstration for the Eight-Hour Day, has been observed by the workers of the world every year for nearly half a century. It has commemorated from year to year their never-ending struggle for work, for bread, for freedom, and for peace.
This year, Labour's Day finds the organised forces of the working-class united as never before in resistance to the monstrous dangers that threaten their lives, their homes, and their liberties. They are joined in strong defence against the double menace of Fascism and War. Brutal dictators who have tried in vain to quench with blood the flame of Freedom, are preparing now to drive the nations once more into fratricidal conflict. Alike in the murderous tyranny it has imposed on the peoples it rules, in its savage war of conquest in Abyssinia, in its criminal assault upon the people and Government of Spain, Fascism stands exposed as the deadliest enemy of Freedom and Democracy everywhere.
